A journey, this of Plexus International, which set sail in 1984 from the Lower East Side of New York with the open call "In Order to Survive" aimed at the survival of artists in the community.

Plexus International, active for over 30 years, born in 1982 in New York and took root in Rome, Dakar, Cagliari and Cairns in Australia, realizing numerous events, "art-works" and "art-coopere", in which over 1000 artists participated, with recalls of attention towards biodiversity also social diversity; the commodification of art and the alternatives to it; slavery understood in a historical and metaphorical sense; the search for free forms of artistic expression and sustainable development. As of 10 December 2017, the Metr'ART has reached a total length of 287.60 meters, with 719 works by 304 artists from around the world who have responded via emails to Plexus International Open Calls to measure together the different forms of "erosion, growing in the world symbolically starting from the sea erosion of the "Door of No Return" of the House of Slaves of Goree, Dakar, as a symbol of the erosion of the historical memory of humanity, the erosion of human rights, freedom and peace in the world , to the erosion of the natural and cultural heritage of the planet.Symbolic measurements that have become in the construction of the Metr'ART expressions of freedom of art, no longer understood and experienced as an autonomous experience concerning the expression of the individual artist but as a collective contribution to the widening of perception and knowledge, a different way of seeing the world collectively, artistically and freely expressed, combining diversity and safeguarding the identity of "each" participant artist.

A global cultural navigation that has linked art to improving the quality of life for all. - to the well-being, as a human right for all; a conscious way of living, individual and collective. Since its inception, Plexus International has turned itself to experimental artistic researches of alternatives aimed at improving human experience, through social, environmental and economic change, imagined and explored through artistic practice, in which art is an essential element of human evolution.There is the awareness of the necessary interconnection between all spheres of life.

"We humans are a single, interdependent species widespread throughout the world. Although we like it or not, we are intimately bound with each other around the earth. The Plexus International's journey expresses an intentional indeterminacy, a challenge that directly involves the community of art,from an angle outside the scheme of the existing art system, a trait of its original aesthetic projection, questioning the prerogative of conferring the artistic identification of exclusive prerogative to the art world and claiming the right also for the community to confer the artistic identification to its artists.

Plexus rejecting the concept of "art by the sake of art", has positioned art in the "community", as a vital part of the wider reality in which we all live. By not accepting the growing commodification of art, Plexus International has intentionally moved the focus of its attention from the New York art world to the Door of the Non-Return of the House of the Slaves of Goree, Dakar, as an aesthetic and ethical platform from which to symbolically start again the return of art in the community.

Plexus International has  brought artists and scientists together on a art journey  for freedom, against all forms of ancient or contemporary slavery, deliberately placing itself outside the art system, rejecting its definitions and categories, in the panorama of contemporary art characterized by the historical brevity of its artistic groups and movements.
From the Door of No Return, in 1988, the Plexus Rivington School Art Slavery Manifesto Open Call was launched with an open letter to all the artists of the world for a reflection on the autonomy of art from the market, proposing the renegotiation of a new art contract to defense of all artists, especially those outside or at the margins of the art world.

The Door of No Return has become in the journey of Plexus International the metaphor of crossing a threshold – "open the door of your heart to go into the future" for a change of course in the process of widening the perception and acquisition of new knowledge in the context of the explorations underway in contemporary art. Passing through this door means, therefore, the artist-in-first-person commitment in this sense within the art community. Revaluing art and its practice as a possibility of widening the perception and substantial contribution of knowledge, the Plexus International event at MACRO-Asilo is a free invitation to venture on a journey in which the artist-in-first-person, ie without "mediators", she/he  is at the same time the author, the producer and the final product of his work, and not a mere object / product of the art market that cancels the artist as a creative subject / person.

Since the beginning of his activities, Plexus International has used the symbolic-metaphorical language to navigate through the specialized seas of knowledge, overcoming categorizations, classifications and fragmentation, uniting artists of different disciplines, languages and cultures, bearers of different values. In our days, venturing into archetypes and metaphors of myths keeping them alive and present in our consciences can help to give harmony and consistency in the awareness of our existences and  interdependencies in Planet Earth, understood as a whole living organism.
Butterflies are bioindicators, ie biological indicators of the degree of health and conservation of the habitat in which they live. The BUTTERFLY is a symbol of lightness and freedom.

The metamorphosis of the butterfly is basically a sign of transformation and rebirth: representation of the ability to put wings and hover in flight through a metamorphosis that affects our whole being. Through the colorful wings, at the same time as the ability to fly, there is also the possibility of spreading beauty and color in the world.

The conservation of the most fragile species through the protection of the habitats they have adapted to, is therefore an imperative.The human evolutionary path and our history tell us of a constant and timely presence of art in the development processes of our human species, widening the horizons and the knowledge of the world.These considerations lead to reflections on the re-positioning of art in the processes of change in planetary life as a whole, which nothing and no one exclude.

The positioning of art as an "autonomous world" has determined the distancing and differentiation from the flow of life in civil society, placing it outside the processes of becoming and acting, as an activity confined to its specific context. Every change, every shift, every mutation of the set of relationships that regulate life, finds an answer and a correspondence in aesthetics, producing new ways, different times and different collocation of the "work" in the social context, this corresponds to an evolutionary thrust of the whole perceptual system both individual and collective, modifying the relationship between aesthetics,rule and behavior, determining new and different ways of being and consequent behaviors. Every Plexus International event has been built on the present, projected towards the future keeping in mind the previous event. The event at MACRO-Asilo will be prepared, through an open participatory process in such a way as to involve a wider participation of artists of different artistic expressions and cultures and representatives of the civil society organizations. In the tradition of the previous events organized by Plexus International an Open Call will be launched addressed to all the artists in first person for sending by emails their art contributions that will give historical continuity to the Metr'Art.
